IFK Göteborg, UEFA Cup Champions
IFK Göteborg is a Swedish football club, founded in 1904. International cup triumphs in the 80s, four times participants in the UEFA Champions League in the 90s – winning against teams like AC Milan, Manchester United and Bayern Munich – made IFK Göteborg an established football club in Europe. It all started in 1982. Coached by Sven-Göran Eriksson, the team succeeded in something no one expected, winning the UEFA Cup finals against one of the best teams of the era – Hamburger SV from Germany. The triumph was even more remarkable considering that the team consisted mainly by non-professional players. For instance, one of the major stars of the team, Glenn Hysén, worked part time as an electrician.
IFK Göteborg succeeded in winning the UEFA Cup again in 1987, making them the only male football club from a Nordic country to ever win a European club tournament.
