National Day 2021 – celebrate with Sweden!
On June 6, the Swedish Institute will once again broadcast a show to celebrate Sweden’s National Day. The concept from last year will be refined and will also reflect the great feedback we received from foreign missions and the viewers. The programme will also this year feature music and performances, short features of Swedish people and cook-a-longs etc.
Plenty of communication material is now provided to enable you to market the event, such as trailers, a quiz, and a banner for facebook etc.

The programme is in English, approx. 90 minutes and was made available on May 25. If you wish to show the programme, kindly do the following:
- Apply for the toolkit. (This is the only way to receive the video file)
- Decide what level of engagement you wish to have:
a) Want to add a greeting from your Ambassador? Film the greeting and book a local video editor who can add the greeting to the beginning of the film. (Please note: No alterations are allowed in the programme. You may only add something in the beginning.)
b) Want translated subtitles? Book a translator and a local video editor. The transcript (SRT files) are available in English. (Financial support can be applied for by using the normal toolkit procedure.) Don’t forget to coordinate with other foreign missions that have the same language needs you have.
c) If you do not wish to add a greeting or subtitles you can publish it the way it is received in your preferred social media channel. The programme will also be streamed on Sweden.se website, facebook and Youtube, so you can use the links provided above to that streaming if you wish to keep your engagement to a minimum.

The film was made available on May 25 for Swedish foreign missions to add subtitles in their local languages if needed as well as a greeting in the beginning of the film. This way, you can show it in your preferred social media channel any time after 10:30 CEST. The programme will also be streamed on Sweden.se facebook and Youtube.
- The video will be filmed in HD
- Size of the video will be approximately 8.6 GB
- Format: 16:9, mp4 ((H.264 i 1920x1080p 25fps)
- The video will be transferred via link (Vimeo) on May 25 by email to all who have applied for the toolkit
If you wish to add a greeting and/or subtitles, book a local video editor to add the greeting to the beginning of the film. (Please note: No alterations are allowed except adding a greeting). A recommended length of the greeting 2-5 minutes.
How to translate the srt-file
- Open the file in a text editor (Notepad or WordPad for Windows or TextEdit if you use a Mac)
- Start translating the English text into your language. It’s extremely important that you don’t make any changes in the time codes, just replace the English text with your translation, exactly as it is written in the file.
- Save your file and make sure that you save it in the same format as you got it (.srt).
- Done! Great job! Now you’re ready to send the file to your video editor.
Instructions for adding subtitles and a greeting to the video
- Start by letting your video editor add your subtitles (the srt-file) to the video. It’s important that this is done before you add your greeting, since the subtitles are timecoded.
- Add your greeting with subtitles to the beginning of the video (Please note: No alterations are allowed except adding a greeting in the beginning of the show).
- Save it. When saving it, we recommend that you use the same format as it was when we sent it to you,16:9, mp4 (H.264 i 1920x1080p 25fps).
Some suggestions for your greeting
- Film it in 16:9 (horizontal view)
- A recommended length of the greeting is 2-5 minutes
- Add subtitles to the greeting
Publishing your own video
We recommend that you create a Facebook-event and publish your video as a post on the event and/or Facebook feed. If you have a Youtube account we suggest that you post it as an ordinary video. Since the file is quite heavy we recommend that you schedule your posts well in advance, so you have time to see that everything is in order before 6 June. Note! It’s extremely important that you don’t publish it before 10:30 CEST, since that could alter with the Swedish Institutes broadcast. The Swedish Institute will not be able to give technical support on 6 June, so please make sure you’ve prepared your post well in advance and that you have the support you need, technical and other, locally.

Frequently asked questions
Will it be possible to subtitle the stream?
Yes. The final programme was made avaialble from May 25 to enable foreign missions to add translated subtitles and a greeting.
Where will you stream it?
The programme will be streamed on Sweden.se website, facebook and Youtube. The programme will also be made available in advance to foreign missions so you have an opportunity to show it in your preferred channel and at a time on June 6 that is suitable for the time zone you are in.
What kind of content will you offer?
It will be a smorgasbord of Sweden including music and performances, short features of Swedish people and cook-a-longs etc. The programme will be approximately 90 minutes. We will also offer social media content that can be used before, during and after the event.
We would like to add a film/greeting from our ambassador, can we do that?
Yes. Since the programme will be made available in advance it will be possible to add a greeting to the programme. The length of the greeting is up to you, but we would recommend to keep it fairly short (2-5 minutes). See instructions above.
