Yet, around the world, many still lack the fundamental right to decide over their own bodies, sexuality, and reproduction. Consent is not always recognised as a fundamental right, even within marriage, leaving countless individuals vulnerable to pressure and violence.
In 2018, Sweden introduced a consent law, affirming that sex must be based on explicit agreement from everyone involved. The law has strengthened awareness of communication and respect, sparking global discussions on bodily autonomy and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
SRHR is about power. The power to make decisions over one’s own body. On Women’s Day and every day, we stand for a world in which these rights are protected for all.
