Article on the Swedish school system on Sweden.se
Captions Education is key in Sweden. It's tax-financed, and compulsory between the ages of 6 and 16. π‘ π
Here are some facts about the Swedish school system: ππ»
π The Swedish school year runs approximately from mid-August to mid-June, with the exact start and end dates being decided by each municipality.
β± Throughout the school year, students enjoy several breaks: a week-long 'autumn holiday' π , two to three weeks over Christmas and New Year π
, a 'sports holiday' in late February to early March π , and a week around Easter π₯ .
π§βπ Students in Sweden don't wear uniforms, with very few exceptions.
π The school provides study materials such as textbooks, notebooks, pens and computers...
π ...as well as lunch to all students aged 6β16 β all financed by taxes.
π«π· π©πͺ πͺπΈ In Year 6, all students can choose a third language. Options include French, Spanish, German and possibly another modern language.
π¬ Children who speak a language other than Swedish at home, can apply for home language instruction.
π Swedish compulsory schooling includes four stages: 'fΓΆrskoleklass' (preschool year, or year 0), 'lΓ₯gstadiet' (years 1β3), 'mellanstadiet' (years 4β6) and 'hΓΆgstadiet' (years 7β9).
π Sweden also has five Sami schools, equivalent to primary school years 1β6. These schools aim to enhance the ability of the indigenous Sami community to maintain and cultivate their Sami identity within the framework of Swedish society.
π Most students continue their education in upper secondary school, known as 'gymnasium' (years 10β12). While not compulsory, it's essential for university admission or vocational pursuits.
