Internships at Swedish companies in countries on the ODA recipient list How to use the material This material supports employees at Swedish foreign missions in countries on the DAC lists of ODA recipients in reaching out to Swedish companies to explore opportunities for internships. The target group for internships is Swedish Institute (SI) scholarship alumni and international students from the country.

A manual for Swedish foreign missions, which can also be used as a presentation to promote the programme to Swedish companies. A template for listing potential partners and requested profiles, to be submitted to SI no later than 12 March. Offering internships with local Swedish companies provides alumni with practical experience and strengthens ties between Sweden and partner countries. This initiative aims to enhance the return rate of scholarship recipients by equipping them with skills that complement their academic education and support their contributions to their home communities.
By leveraging foreign mission resources and connections, we create meaningful opportunities that foster mutual collaboration and professional growth.
The following steps outline the process in detail:
Preparation stage : Review all provided materials from SI, including templates, forms, and guidelines. Identify a point of contact at the embassy who will manage the process.Stakeholder engagement : Reach out to relevant stakeholders such as local Swedish companies or alumni networks. Share information about the program and its objectives. Gather information of possibilities and needs at the companies. Coordination with SI : Share a list of potential partners and requested profiles with SI.Deadline 12 March 2025 Send in the list of internships to the contact at SI no later than 12 March, 2025. Use the template provided on this page.

Target group for the internship The target group for internships is
Alumni from the SI Scholarship programmes Other international students in Sweden Their studies have ended maximum a year before the expected internship. These individuals have completed one- or two-year master’s studies in Sweden across a wide range of disciplines.
Foreign missions The roles and responsibilities are critical to ensuring the success of the process. These include:
Identifying relevant stakeholders: Assist in identifying local partners, such as Swedish companies, institutions, or other organizations that can participate in the program. Facilitating communication: Act as a liaison between SI and local stakeholders, ensuring a smooth exchange of information and expectations. Providing local insights: Share insights about the local context, including potential challenges or opportunities that could affect the process. Supporting events and activities: Organise or support events such as networking sessions, workshops, or informational meetings when required. Monitoring and reporting: Regularly provide SI with updates SI on progress, including identification of potential partner companies and any challenges faced, or feedback received from local stakeholders.Ensuring adherence to guidelines: Ensure that all local activities align with SI’s guidelines, objectives, and values. Swedish Institute Marketing : Informing scholarship holders and international students about the internship opportunities in their countries. Call for applications : Launch a call for applications directed towards scholarship alumni and students from the country where the internship is located.Reviewing and selecting : Reviewing the applications and conduct a selection of candidates for each internship. Financial support : SI supports the selected candidates with financial payments during the internship period. The monthly amount will vary depending on the country and will be decided by the Swedish Institute and the Foreign Mission.Communication with SI Communication between the mission and SI will primarily take place via email. See designated email address provided below.
For non-urgent matters, a response time of 2-3 business days is expected. For urgent issues, embassies should use direct phone contact, with a response time of 24 hours for time-sensitive matters.
If needed, scheduled follow-up calls for more detailed discussions, regular check-ins via video calls or virtual meetings can be arranged if needed to ensure the program's smooth implementation.

FAQ How many interns can SI support at each company? It is up to each company to decide on how many interns they can welcome. SI has a limited budget and if needed will decide how many interns can be financially supported depending on the outreach.
How long can internship period be? Maximum 6 months starting August and ending no later than the end of January.
Can foreign missions apply for financial funding from SI to reach to out to companies? No. The financial support provided by SI is exclusively intended to cover the interns’ monthly allowances.
Does it have to be a call for applications for the internships? Can embassies or companies nominate their own candidates? No, it must be an open process. This ensures that the specific target group for this initiative has equal access and opportunity to apply.
Do the internships have to be in any specific sector or industry? No, the internships can be in any sector or industry, as long as the host company or organisation is Swedish.
Does the internship period have to be completed by any given date or time frame? Yes, the internship can last a maximum of 6 months, starting in August and ending no later than the end of January.
Can the company receive any financial support for offering internships? No, the financial support is provided directly to the interns, not to the companies.
Can companies contact SI directly if they have any questions? The main point of contact for the companies is the contact person at the Swedish embassy.
