In real life, Öland is a popular tourist destination. Hundreds of thousands of beach lovers cross the Öland Bridge from the mainland in the summer. 🏖️
And in spring and autumn, bird watchers flock here to watch the migratory birds come back to or fly away from Sweden. Many birds rest and breed at Ottenby on the southern tip of Öland. 🐦
Like 'Nordic noir' literature in general, Theorin's books seem to be a hit among international readers, with titles translated into many different languages. And two of his novels have won the British Crime Writers' Association's Dagger Award. 🌟
Theorin himself used to spend every summer on Öland, listening to his grandparents' stories about trolls and ghosts – probably good inspiration for the crime-prone Öland of his books. 🦹♂️
'The Darkest Room' features a mysterious – and fictional – lighthouse location called Åludden. And the existent lighthouse Långe Erik, located on the northern tip of Öland, is actually rumoured to be haunted... 👻
