So what exactly is Blackwater, ‘Svartvattnet’ in Swedish?
🌊 It’s the fictitious village where Ekman’s novel is set – quite the name for a place with a gloomy past! The book, which in Swedish is titled ‘Händelser vid vatten’ (‘Happenings by water’), centres around an unresolved double murder.
It's been said that Blackwater resemebles Valsjöbyn, a Jämtland town near the border to 🇳🇴 Norway, where author Kerstin Ekman lived for many years.
Released in 1993, ‘Blackwater’ is one of Sweden’s most praised crime novels ever. It won both the August Prize and the Nordic Council Literature Prize, and it was made into a series that premiered on Swedish television in 2023. 📺
💙 💛 Do read the book, watch the series if you can, and at some stage visit Jämtland, too. Don’t let the horrors of the novel daunt you – these are very peaceful landscapes!
