Captions The evening of 28 February marks the beginning of Ramadan for Muslims in Sweden this year! 🎉 Over the coming month, Muslims across the country and the world will observe fasting from dawn till dusk, with fasting hours in Sweden averaging around 13 hours this year.
Ramadan is a time to strengthen connections with loved ones and engage in acts of charity, a time of reflection and spiritual growth.
Sweden's connection to Islamic culture dates back as far as the Viking Age (700–1000 AD). Archaeological finds, along with ancient Arabic and Persian chronicles, reveal that Vikings engaged in trade and cultural exchanges with Muslim empires. 📜
The first Muslim to become a Swedish citizen while keeping his faith was Ebrahim Umerkajeff, who arrived from Russia in 1897. He played a key role in establishing Sweden's first Muslim association in 1949, which later became a congregation. Today, a handful different Islamic faith organisations exist on a national level, along with several hundred local congregations throughout Sweden.
We wish those who observe Ramadan a blessed and peaceful month! 🌙
