🌍 On the island of Öland, off Sweden’s southeast coast, 16 Iron Age ring forts stand as silent witnesses to a turbulent past. These circular stone formations hold clues to how people once responded to crisis and change. 🌪️ 🦠
🔍 In an eight-year research project, archaeologists from Stockholm University, Linnaeus University, and Kalmar County Museum are exploring how these forts were built, used, abandoned, and sometimes reused between 300 to 700 AD – a time marked by conflict, disease, and shifting climates.
By uncovering the stories of the communities behind the forts, the researchers hope to better understand how societies face and adapt to periods of upheaval – insights that speak to challenges human communities encounter across time ⏳ , not least today.
