The journey began with arts teacher Estrid Ericson (1894–1981) from Hjo, by Swedish lake Vättern. 🎨 In her thirties, Ericson established the company Svenskt Tenn in Stockholm. She focused on offering stylish design objects made of pewter ('tenn' in Swedish), one of the most exciting materials at the time. She collaborated with pewter artist Nils Fougstedt, and they produced the objects themselves in a small workshop behind the store. ⚱️ 🖼️
Fast-forward a decade, and enter Austrian architect Josef Frank 🇦🇹 , who came to Sweden in 1933. Together, Ericson and Frank shaped the elegant and colourful furnishing style that defines the company still today. 🛋️ 🌈
At the age of 81, Ericson sold the company to the Kjell and Märta Beijer Foundation, but she stayed on as managing director for several years. The surplus funds from Svenskt Tenn support research in ecological sustainability, environmental care and pharmaceuticals, among other things. 🌿 💊
