Infographics text (for translation) Denmark - 1219: The world’s oldest national flag still in use. According to legend, the flag fell from the sky during a battle in 1219 and turned the tide. The white cross stands for Christianity.
Sweden - 16th century: Sweden’s flag takes its shape from Denmark’s, but the colours – blue and yellow – come from the national coat of arms: three golden crowns on a blue shield.
Norway - 1821: The cross highlights ties to the other Nordic countries, while the flag’s red, white, and blue palette was inspired by the French tricolour, a symbol of liberty.
Finland - 1918: The blue cross on white stands for the country’s thousands of lakes and snowy winters. The flag was adopted in 1918, just after independence from Russia.
Iceland - 1918: The colours reflect Icelandic nature: red for volcanic fire, white for snow and ice, blue for the sea and sky. The flag became official in 1918, when Iceland gained sovereignty from Denmark.
Faroe Islands - 1919: The flag's name is Merkið, literally 'the banner'. Echoes Nordic heritage: white for the sea foam and sky, red and blue from traditional Faroese clothing. It was designed in 1919 by Faroese students in Copenhagen.
Åland - 1954: This Swedish-speaking island group and autonomous region of Finland has a flag that blends Swedish blue and yellow with a red cross – symbolising the region’s connection to Finland. Photo: Visit Åland
Greenland - 1985: The flag is called Erfalasorput, meaning ‘our flag’ in Greenlandic. The red matches the Danish flag, while the white stripe stands for Greenland’s massive ice cap. The red semicircle? That’s the sun, half-submerged and mirrored on the sea.
