The flag and national day of the Sami people How to use the material This post for social media is about the flag and national day of the Sami people. The Sami are one of the world's indigenous peoples, and one of Sweden's five official national minorities.
You can use the post on social media, for example on 6 February, the national day of the Sami people.
Captions Today is the national day of the Sami people! It’s a day celebrated across Sápmi, the area stretching over the north of Sweden, Norway and Finland, and Russia’s Kola Peninsula.
The Sami are one of the world's indigenous peoples, and one of Sweden's five official national minorities, with around 20,000-40,000 Sami living in Sweden today. By Swedish law, the Sami languages and the Sami culture are to be preserved.
6 February honours the first Sami national meeting held in Trondheim, Norway, back in 1917. That meeting brought together hundreds of Sami over national borders to discuss joint issues for the first time.
The Sami flag – in red, blue, green and yellow – is for all Sami people, regardless of which country they live in. The four colours are also those most commonly found on traditional Sami garbs. The red part of the circle symbolises the sun, the blue part the moon.
