27 January is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. In 2025, it is 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz–Birkenau, the Nazi concentration and extermination camp, in 1945.

Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day. We’d like to mark this day by sharing the story of survivor Alice Kertész, née Grosz.

Let’s go back to Budapest, Hungary, in 1944. World War II is ravaging Europe, and 30-year-old Alice’s life is in danger. She is Jewish in a city that has just been occupied by the armies of Nazi Germany, who are deporting Jews to concentration camps.

Alice, who runs a dairy shop, decides to disguise herself as a Catholic war widow and use duplicate identity papers.

She is unmarried and lives alone, but there is a man in Alice's life – Sándor. He, on the other hand, is married and has three children.

The Nazis send Sándor’s family to Auschwitz–Birkenau, where they are killed in the gas chambers. Sándor himself is sent to different labour camps and is liberated by the American army in May 1945.

Eventually, Sándor comes back to Budapest and Alice, and a year later they get married. In 1948, they move to Sándor’s home city of Jászberény, where their son Tomas is born in 1954.

A couple of years later, with antisemitism back on the rise in Hungary, the small family decides to leave. And in July 1957, Alice and Sándor get off the ferry in Trelleborg, in the very south of Sweden, together with their nearly three-year-old son. Now, they can start a new life.

Alice died in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1982. Her son, Tomas Kertész, has shared this story and lent the photo of Alice and Sándor to the Swedish Holocaust Museum.

Today, it is 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz–Birkenau, the Nazi concentration and extermination camp where thousands of prisoners still remained in 1945. Around 6 million people perished in the Holocaust.

On 27 January 2000, the Stockholm Declaration was born. It is the founding document of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.
