15 October 2024Swedish studies – a resource for Sweden promotion
Every year, over 27,000 students study Swedish at higher education institutions outside of Sweden. This presents many opportunities for collaboration when it comes to Sweden promotion. The Swedish Institute (SI) supports 200 universities abroad and can help you get in touch.
200 universities in 35 different countries
The students are often young people with a deep interest in Sweden. They study Swedish either as an additional subject to their education or as a main subject within Scandinavian studies.
Collaborating with universities offers many benefits, and students can be valuable resources at events, for example as translators, interpreters, or participants. They are an important group to stay in touch with. The collaboration can be as simple as an annual Lucia celebration and contact with the local Swedish teacher, or larger projects such as Sweden Days and conferences.
Contact persons at the universities
At each university, there is a Swedish teacher who is the SI contact person. The Swedish teachers have broad networks within the university, and many are local teachers. Others are Swedes who are permanently residing in the country, or Swedish lecturers who has taught Swedish around the world for a few years.
Find contact information to your nearest university at si.se (information in Swedish)
Examples of collaborations
Many Swedish embassies and consulates already have well-developed cooperation with the universities in the country. Here are some good examples:
Vienna, Austria
The embassy in Vienna has close cooperation with the University of Vienna, where SI in November supports inviting the author and science journalist Karin Bojs both to the university and for participation at the book fair in Vienna, where Swedish students always help in the embassy’s booth. Every autumn and spring, the embassy invites representatives from all Swedish associations and the Swedish lecturer to a meeting.
Berlin, Germany
The embassy in Berlin has close contact with the 54 universities with Swedish language instruction in the country and co-organizes Swedish teacher conferences with SI. The universities are also offered SI’s toolkit to increase interest in Sweden and the Swedish language at universities and colleges.
Washington DC, USA
The embassy in Washington DC has close cooperation with the Association for Swedish Teachers and Researchers of America (ASTRA) and, together with SI, organizes an ASTRA conference at the House of Sweden every other year. In other years, the conference is held at one of the 25 universities with Swedish language instruction in the USA or one of the 2 in Mexico or 2 in Canada.
Support to universities from SI
The Swedish Institute supports and collaborates with about 200 universities that offer Swedish studies and Swedish language studies.
The Swedish Institute offers support through:
Financial support for events, guest lectures, and study trips
Regional conferences in the USA, Germany, France, Poland
Financial support for the purchase of teaching materials and literature
Programs to visit Sweden for teachers and students from Ukraine, Georgia, and Belarus
Summer courses for students at Swedish folk high schools
Swedish lecturers

The Eurovision toolkit has been updated with new material for the ABBA jubilee, a social media plan, and event material for Eurovision. More social media content will come up until the end of April.
On 6 April it’s 50 years since ABBA won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo. You can find material to celebrate this event in the toolkit. The material includes a recorded speech from Björn Ulvaeus, a face hole cut-out-board of ABBA, social media content, a playlist, and talking points on ABBA’s Eurovision victory.
You can also find event material for a Eurovision celebration in the toolkit. For example there are templates for invitations and posters to market your event. The material also includes tips on how to create a viewing party and a logo and designs for merch such as balloons, metal pins, and totebags. All material is to be produced locally.

28 February 2024Enhanced financial support for Sweden promotion
We are pleased to announce that the Swedish Institute has secured additional funding for Sweden promotion in 2024. Consequently, the previous financial limitation of 100,000 SEK/year per embassy and consulate has been lifted.
When you seek financial support, it should still primarily cover local production costs for toolkit materials and expenses related to invited guest speakers. While other event-related costs, such as venue rentals and communication expenses, may be considered, they should constitute only a minor portion of the budget. Catering costs will only be covered for Study in Sweden and Sweden alumni relations events.
You apply for financial support via the SI Customer Portal. If you have not yet done so, please create an account to initiate the application process. As usual, resources are limited, funding may not be available at all times. Should you have any questions or require further assistance, please feel free to reach out.

28 February 2024The Swedish film selection 2024 is here
The first four films of the 2024 Swedish film selection are now released: Together 99 by Lukas Moodysson, UFO Sweden by the film collective Crazy Pictures, the documentary The King by Karin af Klintberg, and Bullets directed by Peter Pontikis.
To offer as many new films as possible, one or two more films will be added during the year.
With the new application process, you only need to make your application in one place, using the same application form for both the films and the financial support. You apply via the SI customer portal, using the new form for the Swedish film selection.
The Swedish Institute will translate films into German, Spanish and French on demand. Make sure to apply in good time, to ensure that there is enough time for translation. For other languages, you will need to include the costs for local translation in the budget of your application.

24 October 2023New exhibition modules from January 2024
From January 2024 there will be a new exhibition architecture for the Swedish Institute’s toolkit exhibitions. The new exhibition architecture consists of a family of modules that are versatile, easy to build and put together, simple to store and transport.
The new exhibition architecture works well as stand-alone modules for presenting only one or two prints, and they work even better when they are combined to create scenographies, spaces and rooms within the exhibition spaces.
The design is made as a collaboration by Between the lines Architecture and Studio Rebecca Ahlstedt.
A stand-alone module.

"title": "Swedish studies – a resource for Sweden promotion",
"content": "\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery year, over 27,000 students study Swedish at higher education institutions outside of Sweden. This presents many opportunities for collaboration when it comes to Sweden promotion. The Swedish Institute (SI) supports 200 universities abroad and can help you get in touch.\n\n\n\n\n200 universities in 35 different countries\n\n\n\nThe students are often young people with a deep interest in Sweden. They study Swedish either as an additional subject to their education or as a main subject within Scandinavian studies. \n\n\n\nCollaborating with universities offers many benefits, and students can be valuable resources at events, for example as translators, interpreters, or participants. They are an important group to stay in touch with. The collaboration can be as simple as an annual Lucia celebration and contact with the local Swedish teacher, or larger projects such as Sweden Days and conferences.\n\n\n\nContact persons at the universities\n\n\n\nAt each university, there is a Swedish teacher who is the SI contact person. The Swedish teachers have broad networks within the university, and many are local teachers. Others are Swedes who are permanently residing in the country, or Swedish lecturers who has taught Swedish around the world for a few years.\n\n\n\nFind contact information to your nearest university at si.se (information in Swedish)\n\n\n\nExamples of collaborations\n\n\n\nMany Swedish embassies and consulates already have well-developed cooperation with the universities in the country. Here are some good examples:\n\n\n\nVienna, Austria\n\n\n\nThe embassy in Vienna has close cooperation with the University of Vienna, where SI in November supports inviting the author and science journalist Karin Bojs both to the university and for participation at the book fair in Vienna, where Swedish students always help in the embassy’s booth. Every autumn and spring, the embassy invites representatives from all Swedish associations and the Swedish lecturer to a meeting.\n\n\n\nBerlin, Germany\n\n\n\nThe embassy in Berlin has close contact with the 54 universities with Swedish language instruction in the country and co-organizes Swedish teacher conferences with SI. The universities are also offered SI’s toolkit to increase interest in Sweden and the Swedish language at universities and colleges.\n\n\n\nWashington DC, USA\n\n\n\nThe embassy in Washington DC has close cooperation with the Association for Swedish Teachers and Researchers of America (ASTRA) and, together with SI, organizes an ASTRA conference at the House of Sweden every other year. In other years, the conference is held at one of the 25 universities with Swedish language instruction in the USA or one of the 2 in Mexico or 2 in Canada.\n\n\n\nSupport to universities from SI\n\n\n\nThe Swedish Institute supports and collaborates with about 200 universities that offer Swedish studies and Swedish language studies.\n\n\n\nThe Swedish Institute offers support through:\n\n\n\n\nFinancial support for events, guest lectures, and study trips\n\n\n\nRegional conferences in the USA, Germany, France, Poland\n\n\n\nFinancial support for the purchase of teaching materials and literature\n\n\n\nPrograms to visit Sweden for teachers and students from Ukraine, Georgia, and Belarus\n\n\n\nSummer courses for students at Swedish folk high schools\n\n\n\nSwedish lecturers\n\n\n\n\nMore information on Swedish around the world\n\n\n\nIf you want to know more about Swedish studies, SI’s support to universities, or get more examples on collaborations, please contact the Swedish studies team at sveu@si.se\n\n\n\n \n Related content\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Have you heard these Swedish words? 1.0\n \n \n \n \n \n Have you heard these Swedish words? 2.0\n \n \n \n \n \n Swedish proverbs\n \n \n \n \n \n ‘Sverige A-Ö’ slideshow\n \n \n \n \n \n Sweden – a country less ordinary\n \n \n \n \n \n Sweden – folder for school children\n \n \n \n\n\n",
