In the film, a traveling theatre company takes a production of Aristophanes’ play 'Lysistrata' on tour. It is 1968. Men are in charge and the world is burning. In other words, not much has changed since 411 BCE, when Aristophanes wrote his play. In that work, the heroine Lysistrata wanted to end the twenty-year war between Athens and Sparta by persuading the women to deny the men sex. It’s not long before the cast of play start seeing their own lives and relationships through fresh eyes.

Director’s biography: Mai Zetterling (1925-1994) was a Swedish actor, author, screenwriter and film director. Mai Zetterling was a pioneer and ground-breaker in the world of film. She was not afraid to fund her projects in unconventional ways, and her films often provoked debate about everything from gender roles and sexuality to seal-hunting. Mai Zetterling became a film director when few women were, and fought for her right to make her own decisions. She often worked to her own script and as her own creative producer. Somewhat reluctantly and without particular feminist intentions, she came to be a role model for later generations of women filmmakers.

"children": "The Girls is a Swedish drama film directed by Mai Zetterling. In the film, a traveling theatre company takes a production of Aristophanes’ play 'Lysistrata' on tour. It is 1968. Men are in charge and the world is burning. In other words, not much has changed since 411 BCE, when Aristophanes wrote his play. In that work, the heroine Lysistrata wanted to end the twenty-year war between Athens and Sparta by persuading the women to deny the men sex. It’s not long before the cast of play start seeing their own lives and relationships through fresh eyes."
